Vandalized Hollywood Hills Mansions Closed, Suspects Arrested

A viral Hollywood Hills mansion, covered in graffiti and plagued by squatters, has been shut down after two arrests were made in connection with vandalism. The property, owned by John Powers Middleton, the son of Philadelphia Phillies co-owner, had become a hotspot for trespassers, thanks to viral social media posts.

On Wednesday, the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) arrested Jacob Smith, 35, and Thomia Fagan, 19, after they were seen spray-painting the mansion on Mulholland Drive and fleeing the scene in a white Mercedes-Benz. Smith faces charges of suspicion of vandalism, while Fagan was charged with suspicion of possessing a firearm in a vehicle. Police recovered several spray paint cans and a loaded unregistered firearm during the arrests.

Middleton, a film producer, has faced criticism over the condition of his two abandoned mansions in the Hollywood Hills, which have become notorious for graffiti and squatting. Both properties, located on Mulholland Drive and N Sunset Plaza Drive, have been left vacant for years, attracting attention from vandals and tourists alike.

In response to the problem, Middleton issued a public apology, expressing frustration over the state of his properties. He acknowledged the criminal activities and pledged to prosecute anyone involved to the full extent of the law. Middleton also promised to improve security, stating that he would implement 24/7 armed guards and ensure ongoing repairs. Additionally, he committed to reimbursing the city for any costs incurred in securing the properties.

The properties have drawn attention not just for their abandonment, but also due to their once-luxurious status. Local residents, baffled by the dilapidated state of the multimillion-dollar homes, have expressed their embarrassment and concern over the safety issues caused by the properties. In response, the city of Los Angeles has taken action, with workers boarding up windows, painting over graffiti, and installing new fencing to prevent further trespassing.

Councilmember Nithya Raman emphasized the importance of holding property owners accountable, noting the public safety risks posed by such negligence.
