(PresidentialDaily.org)- In light of Fox News host Tucker Carlson airing additional footage from the Capitol insurrection that happened back on January 6, 2021, former President Donald Trump is now calling for every person who’s being held in jail for their actions on that day to be immediately released.
House Speaker Kevin McCarthy provided this security footage from that day exclusively to Carlson recently, and the anchor released segments of it as part of a new program that aired recently.
Many political pundits have surmised that McCarthy did this so that conservatives could have a very public counter to the partisan things that came out of the House Select Committee that investigated the insurrection under the Democrat-led lower chamber of Congress last session.
Trump praised Carlson for what he was calling “one of the biggest ‘scoops as a reporter in U.S. history.”
The former president is a little biased about the topic, of course, both because the people who entered the U.S. Capitol building that day did so after they attended a rally held in Trump’s name, and because Trump himself is still facing an investigation for the potential roles he may have played in the insurrection.
On the social media platform that he owns, Truth Social, Trump posted recently:
“Congratulations to Tucker Carlson on one of the biggest ‘scoops’ as a reporter in U.S. history. The New Surveillance Footage of the January 6th Events sheds an entirely different light on what actually happened.
“The Unselect Committee was a giant SCAM, and has now unequivocally been stamped as CRIMINAL FABRICATORS OF THIS MOST IMPORTANT DAY. Pelosi & McConnell failed on security. The Police story is sad and difficult to watch. ‘Trump’ and most others are totally innocent, LET THEM GO FREE, NOW!”
That statement was in line with the rhetoric Trump has been pushing for multiple years now, even before he claimed that the 2020 presidential election was stolen. It’ll certainly play well with his die-hard supporters, too, but how it all is taken in by those who aren’t die-hard in his corner is yet to be seen.
Trump is right now considered the far and away favorite to win the Republican nomination for president in 2024. However, as the primary season gets closer – and as more people announce their candidacy – it’s very likely that the former president will face questions and criticisms about his support for those charged and/or convicted for their actions on January 6, 2021.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and former Vice President Mike Pence are two likely GOP candidates who could potentially go hard on Trump for this stance of his. Some of the other GOP candidates may sidestep the issue so as to not anger Trump.
For his part, the former president also praised McCarthy for releasing the footage to Carlson. He wrote:
“Great courage shown by Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy in releasing the surveillance footage to Tucker Carlson so that our Country, and indeed the World, can see what really went on during the January 6th events.”
