The USS George Washington Carrier Strike Group is currently spearheading a crucial trilateral defense exercise, Freedom Edge, near the Korean Peninsula. Freedom Edge is not a routine drill. “The three countries strongly condemned North Korea’s provocation, including its ICBM test launch, that undermine peace and stability in the region, including the Korean Peninsula, during recent high-level consultations, and this training reflected their will to deter and respond to such threats,” a press release from South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) stated.

Pyongyang’s test launch of the Hwasong-19, its largest intercontinental ballistic missile capable of reaching the U.S. mainland, has raised alarm bells across the international community. The Republic of Korea Navy’s successful launch of a General Atomics Mojave UAV from the amphibious assault ship ROKS Dokdo also marks a significant milestone. This achievement, being the first fixed-wing UAV launch from an ROKN ship, signals a shift towards more advanced, AI-driven defense systems.
