The Incident

A touring helicopter collided with a radio tower in Houston’s Second Ward, resulting in a fiery crash that ended in tragedy. The helicopter, a private air tour flight, struck the tower just before 8 p.m., triggering an explosion that spread flames over two to three blocks. Fortunately, the chaos was contained, with no additional injuries reported on the ground.

While the blast damaged the surrounding area, fierce efforts by the Houston Fire Department quickly subdued the inferno. No homes were directly hit despite the devastation, though some nearby residents faced power outages due to the proximity of a butane tank.

Aftermath and Investigation

Houston Police Chief J. Noe Diaz commented, “This is a tragic loss of life,” while acknowledging the vast scope of the crash aftermath that saw debris scattered throughout the area. Ground zero for the tragedy was near Engelke Street and N. Ennis Street, a stone’s throw from Minute Maid Park, indicating the proximity to the heart of the city.
