In the clamor and confusion surrounding the attempted assassination of former President Trump on Saturday, July 13, a man was caught in the crossfire when he dove in front of his wife and daughter just in time to intercept a bullet that would-be assassin Thomas Matthew Crooks had intended for Donald Trump.
The wife of hero husband Corey Comperatore, who was fifty years old when he died, who made headlines when she refused to take a consolation call from President Joe Biden because she felt doing so would dishonor her husband’s memory, is now opening up about her dead husband’s final words.
In an interview with the New York Post, widow Helen Comperatore revealed that the last thing Corey said was “Get down!” He was, Helen said, her hero.
Despite having refused a phone call from President Biden, Helen says that she harbors no ill-will towards the incumbent. The issue is simply one of politics. She and Corey were hard core Trump supporters, and Corey himself was a “devout Republican.” She felt that he wouldn’t have wanted her to be talking to or legitimizing a President whose politics, policies, and official actions were so at odds with their deeply-held political values.
However, the idea that she might hold a grudge against the President for the death of her husband strikes her as odd. Biden, she said, didn’t do anything to Corey. A “despicable” twenty year-old kid is responsible.
Helen said that she and Corey had originally started dating in high school, and their 29th wedding anniversary was quickly approaching when they attended the Butler, Pennsylvania rally where everything in their lives was blown apart. Their children were with them, and Corey was excited about getting to participate in an exciting campaign event and to be out on such a nice day with his family.
Indeed, Corey shared his anticipation and his plans for the day on the X social media platform the morning that he died.
