The upcoming presidential election has painted a portrait of Donald Trump with which the country has become quite familiar.
Those in support of the former president view this portrayal as a misrepresentation while others who loathe the man latch onto the dramatic narrative that he is a tyrant. But America got the chance to hear a new perspective on Trump in recent weeks when his oldest granddaughter announced her plans to play golf at a Florida university, with much thanks to the former president for the opportunities he provided.
Kai Trump, the daughter of Donald Trump, Jr. and his wife Vanessa, said this week that she has given her “verbal commitment” to attend the University of Miami and play golf for the school.
The 17-year-old—who recently shared how her grandfather both taught her how to play the sport and would always attempt to beat her in competition—was also promoted by her father, who announced on Instagram that she had won a scholarship. In her own social media post, Kai described herself as “beyond excited” about the opportunity.
She went on to express gratitude to her parents, who were “always supporting” her in her “journey.” Kai also gave a special shoutout to Trump, whom she credited for “giving me access” to top tier golf courses as well as providing “tremendous support” for her.
The announcement comes weeks after the former president’s granddaughter gave a speech at the Republican National Convention (RNC) in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She reportedly wanted to say a few words about her grandfather in the aftermath of the failed assassination attempt against him, which occurred just one week before the conference.
According to her father, who introduced her at the event, this was the teenager’s “first time” both “on a stage” and “giving a speech.”
On Wednesday July 17, Kai told the crowd of supporters that she wanted to shed light on a portrait of Trump which “people don’t often see,” adding that he is “just a normal grandpa” to her. Kai reflected on how her grandfather “always asks” how she is “doing,” even though he is still wading through “all these court cases.”
She praised how he “always encourages” her in life, comedically noting that he has the “bar [set] pretty high” and suggesting she may “catch him” one day. Kai also commented specifically on the July 13 shooting at Trump’s campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, which left him with an ear injury, two seriously wounded, and a heroic father dead.
Kai said she “was shocked” upon hearing the news of the shooting, and all she could think about was if her grandfather “was OK.” She added that many people have “put my Grandpa through hell,” praising him for “still standing” through it all.
To conclude her remarks, Kai described Trump as “an inspiration” and expressed her love for him. She also noted that mainstream media presents him so he “seem[s] like a different person,” despite her own knowledge of “who he is.”
