Republican Vice Presidential candidate JD Vance has offered to debate Kamala Harris, as accusations that Donald Trump is scared of her continue. Speaking to reporters in Wisconsin, the Ohio Senator suggested that the Vice President would not take up his offer because she is not yet the bona fide Democratic nominee. Vance also hinted that Harris’s running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, was likewise not secure in his position and could be removed from his post at the upcoming Democrat convention in Chicago.
Governor Walz is also facing questions about his military career as the Trump camp claims he is campaigning on “stolen valor.” Walz served in the Army National Guard for 25 years but never fought in a war, prompting Republicans to question why he told a rally crowd that he “carried weapons of war.”
Addressing gun control, Walz said he has served in the military and hunts, but he still believes in common sense gun control. He insisted that military-style weapons should not be on American streets. JD Vance hit back, calling him a liar and asking him to clarify what war he saw combat in.
Some Democrats, however, said Republicans should probably avoid bringing up military records in tit-for-tat exchanges because of Donald Trump’s record. During the Vietnam War, Mr. Trump avoided being drafted by saying he had bone spurs. When he addressed the issue during an interview, Trump said he would have been honored to serve but added that he was “not a fan” of the war and that Vietnam was a country “that nobody had ever heard of.”
The issue was raised several times during the former President’s 2016 campaign, with critics accusing him of using his wealth to avoid military service. Mr. Trump has defended his record by stating that restoring the US military during his time in the White House made up for any past failings.
Back in Wisconsin, JD Vance also accused Tim Walz of lying about his rank while in service. Vance said Walz falsely claimed to have reached Command Sergeant Major, and Army records reveal this is true, but he retired one rank below at Master Sergeant.
