Maye Musk, Elon Musk’s mother, attracted backlash from netizens after criticizing the dirty streets and homelessness crisis in New York City.
On her son’s social media platform, X, Maye posted a collage of two pictures of NYC streets. One picture showed the streets filled with garbage, while the other apparently depicted a homeless person lying on a sidewalk wrapped in a blanket.
In her post, Maye claimed that NYC has only started experiencing such a severe crisis in the last two years, adding that she had to hold her dog tightly during her morning walk. However, X users were quick to slam her.
One person criticized Maye for her ignorance, writing that NYC has always faced such issues and asking her, “what planet have you been on?”
Another user sarcastically criticized the homeless person lying on the sidewalk for disrupting the morning walk of a rich lady.
Similarly, another user accused Maye of spreading misinformation, noting that he had lived in NYC for 12 years and had always found its streets dirty.
Additionally, one user on X called Maye the “mother of the oligarch” and criticized her for being “tone-deaf” for complaining about homelessness.
Others questioned the flawed US taxation system, claiming that the country does not tax billionaires like her son to address the ongoing homelessness crisis.
Meanwhile, one user wrote that this was a classic example of immigrants complaining about other immigrants. Maye was born in Canada but married to a South African businessman, Errol Musk, where she gave birth to Elon Musk, who would later become the world’s richest person. One person asked Maye to go back to Africa to avoid American problems.
In addition, one user on X wrote that the homeless person in the picture had lost his job at Ford, which had to reduce its operations due to the rise of electric cars made by her son’s company, Tesla.
Some people also posted pictures of cleaner areas of NYC, telling 76-year-old Maye that only some parts of a big city like New York are perfect.
One critic urged Maye to buy the homeless person food and water and offer him a job.
However, some people came to Maye’s defense against the trolls. One of her supporters slammed Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg for not prosecuting criminals and letting them roam free in the streets, adding that NYC’s soft-on-crime policies have pushed it into chaos. Others blamed unchecked immigration from third-world countries for the ongoing crisis.
On September 10, three days after posting the first collage, Maye once again slammed the NYC administration for the city’s dirty sidewalks. She posted a photo of her dog trying to sniff rotten food on the streets during her morning walk.
